Forks Over Knives Documentary: Why Are We All So Sick? (With link to watch the movie in full for free)
By JULIE - 4:39:00 PM
This documentary addresses the question why are we all getting sick and dying despite our medical advancements? This is the very question I had that led me to changing my lifestyle and inspiration for starting this blog. Although I have been fortunate to have a family not nearly affected by Diabetes, Cancer, and Heart Disease, I still feel like I hear about someone I know having all of the above mentioned diseases far too often. It made me wonder why? I don't buy the it's just your genes argument. I think something else is going on. I am hoping to come to my own answer to this question and will share with you what I read or watch to find these answers. I encourage you to form your own opinions and answer this question for yourself. What makes sense to you? I'd love to hear your comments on this movie or subject!
Why is it that Chinese people rarely have any of the major diseases (Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes, etc.), until they started having a more western diet? This question spurred the China Study. The documentary talks about the China Study. Perhaps I'll read the book about the China Study before seeing the movie. The China Study refers to a 20 year research project on diseases and lifestyle factors in rural China and Taiwan by Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The Study encompassed over 100 villages across China. The findings were that a diet high in animal-based foods is associated with chronic disease, while those eating primarily a plant-based diet were the healthiest. They argue that we must avoid meat, dairy and processed foods.
Could this movie turn me into a vegetarian? Probably not, but I am trying to limit my animal products (tonight I'll have half the steak portion I usually have for example). I'm convinced a healthy diet limits animal products, but I'm not yet convinced that it's necessary to eliminate it completely.
I am however convinced that dairy is not as healthy as we have been lead to believe. You have to admit it seems strange that we would feel it's healthy to drink from the teats of another animal. We have replace cow's milk with coconut, almond, and cashew milk. As for meat, I like how Dr Oz says to think of meat as your side dish not the main course. Baby steps...

Review of Documentary The Corporation and a Link to Watch it

My purpose for this blog is to share what I learn about health, self-sustainability, green living, as well as to share my nutrition packed recipes and methods of making more meals from scratch in less time, and to share in my learning how to grow as much food as possible in our tiny city lot. Or in a nut shell, sharing our adventures in learning how to live a more self-sustaining lifestyle and why it is important.
Interestingly, the documentary movie I just watched "The Corporation" by Mark Achbar Jennifer Abbott, and Joel Bakan, does touch on a lot of themes that are related to this blogs mission, but also touched on other themes outside the subject matter of this blog. It's funny how everything is always connected.
The movie looks at the role of the corporation as an entity. Since a corporation is an entity it is separate from the people who make up the company, and therefore has limited liability. Therefore this documentary explores what happens when companies have no accountability. They had Dr. Vandana Shiva, founder of Navdanya and world renowned seed activist on discussing GMO (genetically modified organisms) seeds, the environmental impact of companies toxic waste, and the suppression of the negative report on the bovine growth hormone rBST used to increase milk production. Some themes that were covered in this documentary that are not on topic for this blog were the history of the corporation as an entity, Bolivia's rejection of the privatization of their water by an American company, roles of companies such as Ford, IBM, and Coke Cola in Nazi Germany (they created Fanta for the Nazi's). They also had interviews with interesting people such as Noam Chomsky, and Milton Friedman, and Michael Moore.
I thought this was a very interesting movie, I recommend watching it. You can watch it here on Hulu for free. Or you can read the book version, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, by Joel Bakan.

Review of the Documentary The Gerson Miracle With A Link To Watch It
By JULIE - 9:38:00 AM
I just watched The Gerson Miracle at Hulu, click here to watch it.
According to the Gerson Inst "The Gerson Therapy is a safe, natural treatment developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920’s that uses organic foods, juicing, coffee enemas, detoxification and natural supplements to activate the body’s ability to heal itself. Over the past 60 years, thousands of people have used the Gerson Therapy to recover from so-called “incurable” diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis." You can read parts of the book written by Charlotte Gerson "The Gerson Therapy" online on google books.
You can see a full list of foods allowed and not allowed on the Gerson Diet here in pdf form.
An inspiring documentary on the Cradle to Cradle design concept of the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William McDonough. Winner of the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006
I just saw a great documentary "Waste = Food". View it at Google Video The concept of Waste=Food is about thinking of designing everything to be zero waste, instead of less waste. Basically making things to not have toxic chemicals, so that it can just go in the ground and compost. No more landfills. Completely sustainable buildings that mimic nature. Funny how simple and better nature always is.
The interesting thing is hearing manufactures of products talk about how they used this concept and how they had to change their products because they had toxic chemicals in it. Products like Nike shoes, a fabric manufacture (or clothes have toxic chemicals in it?), etc. Hmmm...
They also wrote a book on this concept, "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things"by William McDonough and Michael Braungart. I have not read it yet but plan to check it out soon. Have you watched it or read the book? If so what did you think? I'd love to hear it.

I just watched the documentary, "The Future of Food" by Deborah Koon Garcia this weekend. It was a precursur to the documentary "Food inc." (which I highly recommend seeing if you have not already.) It is re-airing on pbs Fall 2011 on the series POV. you can check your local listings here. It went much more into depth about the subject of Monsanto and genetically modified food which was just lightly touched on in Food inc. I want to learn more about the company Monsanto they are huge and scary and I want to know all the products they own so I will never support them.
