September Produce Tally and Garden Update

By JULIE - 8:28:00 PM

Our biggest producer by far this month was tomatoes.  So far we made 10 quarts of tomato sauce and 3 pints of pizza sauce with about 18 lbs of tomatoes ready for the next batch.  Our pole beans have been producing well.  We did half pole half bush bean.  This year was our first year doing pole beans I love it, they produce so much more and are easier to harvest.  I am only planting pole beans from now on.  You have to make the most of the space you have!

I was lazy with harvesting our broccoli so some of it went to flower.  I also could have harvested more kale and Swiss Chard than I did.  Our potato harvest was little but I planted it late and didn't build up the potato bin as often as I should have.

Our hot peppers did OK considering they were very shaded by the tomatoes.  I did not plan the placement of them pretty well.  I think they would have produced much better if they were not shaded much like our basil this year that was over shadowed by kale.  So one lesson I learned this year is that even though planting closely using the SQ Ft method is usually good make sure to not place plants that need a lot of shade to close to plants that might shade them.

  1. Thanks Hoosier Girl. It looks so small to me compared to other urban homesteaders tallies, but for only gardening for a few years I'm proud of it. I'd love to hear other gardeners tallies too.
