Emilio Estevez is an Urban Homesteader

Emilio Estevez with his chickens
I was watching the Charlie Rose show on PBS today with actor father and son Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez and I learned that Emilio has a vineyard on one acre in his backyard in Malibu, CA.  He just started tearing up their lawn and started planting.  He also has chickens, bees, a worm farm, and a large vegetable gardens.  How cool is that?  I love that he is only using 1 acre.

I found a few articles with pics of his place I thought I'd share.  Bon Appetit did a story on his farm.  It says an acre, in theory, is capable of producing 30 to 40 thousand dollars' worth of food.  Looks like I need to make more use out of our yard if that's true!

You can see his vineyard at the beginning of the episode of the NBC show "Who Do You Think You Are?"  (That I love by the way) that features his father Martin Sheen.

  1. Great pics, but not sure why he'd not a "hothouse" in Hawaii? And you could probably grow huge amounts of food, in a year-round tropical climate...

    1. Good question Nancy. Actually, I've been meaning to update this posts, as I noticed an error. He actually lives in Malibu. I thought he said he lived in Hawaii, but realized while watching the show "Who do You Think You Are?" with his father Martin Sheen that he actually lives in Malibu. I updated this post with a link to the shows site if you want to watch it. They briefly show Emilio's homestead. Thanks for the comment!
